For both events:
Location: Augustine Centre, 2 Minona Street,
Hawthorn
For more information and bookings: 9819-2844
Workshop: 10.30am to 3.30pm
"Breaking the Spell of Fear and Resignation"
How do we know and break the spell of fear
and resignation in and over our lives? Governments,
media, and businesses are trading in fear
and dependent resignation; they 'produce'
it and reap the fruits of it. Starhawk will
explore with us ways to identify and critically
examine the roots and power of this 'evil
spell' being perpetrated on life. Following
her recent publication, 'Webs of Power',
Starhawk will offer participants ways into
locating the distorted and crippling misuse
of power developing in our political and
social lives, and help us reflect on how
we can use power in effective ways in our
groups, relationships and in creating healthy
and viable communities.
Lunch is provided.
Costs: $60 full, $45 part employed, $30
concession and students.
Talk: 7.30pm to 9.30pm
"Frontline Spirituality"
What is spirituality for? A spiritual practice
and community can bring comfort and healing,
and be a refuge from a harsh world. But
if it remains only that, it loses depth
and integrity. Engaged spirituality
is about challenge as well as comfort, confrontation
as well as healing. Creative, transformative
powers are most needed in places of deep
conflict, oppression and violence. Starhawk
tells tales of magical activism, from actions
in the peace and global justice movements,
and from her work with the International
Solidarity Movement, which does nonviolent
intervention in occupied Palestine.
Cost: $30 employed $15 concession
Saturday, November 29
Several events co-presented by local Pagan
activists and CERES Community Environment
Park.
A partial benefit for CERES.
Location: 8 Lee Street, Brunswick East
Focus of the day: Pagan activism is the
blending of earth-based spirituality with
political action. When we are spiritually
connected to nature and understand that
the Earth is an intricate and living being,
we are ready to take up the responsibility
to take action on her behalf. We realize
that we are the Earth's hands and voice.
This workshop and ritual, held in the CERES
community permaculture garden, take Pagan
spirituality into the realm of action on
behalf of the planet and its peoples. What
are some of the core insights and practical
tools of pagan activism? How do we create
a society based on compassion, balance,
and love for the earth, working from a spiritual
as well as a political base? Can we bring
healing, joy, celebration, and empowerment
into the realm of action? Can we apply our
spiritual values to practical politics?
How do we feed our spirits, avoid burnout
and despair, and renew our courage? With
Starhawk, leading spiritual innovator and
activist for global justice and the environment,
we explore the methods of magic, ritual
and celebration to help us link the worlds
of contemplation and action.
CERES's cafe will be open for both lunch
and dinner, or bring a picnic and dine in
the garden.
Workshop: 1-5 pm
This workshop will be about the tools, the
HOW of making a difference. It provides
an opportunity to those who wish to learn
from Starhawk's knowledge and experience
in an
intimate group setting.

"Sacred Earth"
Daylong workshop and evening open ritual;
booksignings follow both. (This program
repeats in Sydney.)
Pagans practice "earth-based spirituality,"
but many of us are not indigenous to the
land we live on, and our myths and deities
arise from other places. Yet we can learn
to listen to the land, and have a deepened
relationship with real air, real fire, real
water, real earth -- real inspiration, passion,
emotion, and embodiment -- as we move around
the magic circle of the elements. In the
center, the place of transformation and
change, is the pattern, the shift in our
thinking from a focus on isolated objects
to Relationship.
Workshops, 10am-5:30pm
In the morning an Aboriginal spokesperson
will introduce us to the wisdom of this
land with "Earth Dreaming." Creation, dreaming
... what is it? What does it mean for Koori
people? What does it mean in terms of one's
spiritual journey? This talk will look at
the links the Koori people have to the Earth
and its oneness, examines spiritual dislocation,
and delves into the Dreamings.
Then Starhawk will guide us through "The
Earth Path: Giving Spirit Roots." She teaches
the tools of observation, awareness, and
magic, "the art of changing consciousness
at will," to deepen connections with the
natural world, and to create the myths and
rituals that can bring us into harmony with
the full community: human and beyond-human.
Cost of Workshop $130, $110 concession,
includes lunch and workbook.
Ritual, 8-10:30pm
Join hands with Starhawk as we connect with
real air, real fire, real water, real earth.
Cost of Ritual $10, $8 concession (work
exchange available, no one turned away from
ritual for lack of funds).

"Envisioning Global Justice in Times of
War"
talk and booksigning, 7 pm
Wars simmer across the globe. World leaders
seem unable to look beyond retaliation,
retribution, and destruction. In such times,
to say "Another world is possible!" is a
radical act. But what does that world look
like, how would it function and how would
it be different from the rule of force and
the deification of profit that mark the
current system? To act effectively against
the violence, we need hope, courage, and
a vision of what real justice might be.

Globalism Institute, RMIT

"Vision & Action"
Workshop, 12.30-5pm
To remake the world, to challenge the structures
of power that create inequality and injustice,
we need courage and vision. In this workshop,
Starhawk helps us find the inner tools that
can free our imaginations to envision a
society that serves life and honors diversity.
We will find sources of strength and renewal
of spirit in the earth and the cycles of
nature. The processes of birth, growth,
death, decay, and regeneration that occur
in the seasons, the plants, and the soil
are models for our own growth and for human
community. Starhawk draws on her experience
with earth-based spirituality, feminism,
permaculture, and nonviolent direct action
to teach tools and skills that can help
us be effective agents of change.
Cost of workshop: $35-50 sliding scale

For those who seek to create a society based

political arena without losing touch with
our spirit? Can we learn to bring healing,

realm of action? And for those who have
been activists, how do we feed our spirits,
avoid burnout and despair, and renew our
courage?

"Envisioning Global Justice in Times of
War"
evening talk, 7 pm
The United States now commands the greatest
military hegemony the world has ever known,
and its firepower backs the global corporate
capitalist system. War rages in Palestine
and occupation continues in Iraq. Afghanistan
is still in ruins. World leaders seem unable
to look beyond retaliation, retribution,
and destruction. In such times, to say "Another
world is possible!" is a radical act. But
what does that world look like, how would
it function and how would it be different
from the rule of force and the deification
of profit that mark the current system?
To act effectively against the violence,
we need hope, courage, and a vision of what
real justice might be. Starhawk speaks from
her experience in both global justice and
peace movements, challenging US militarism
since the days of the Vietnam War, and attending
major antiglobalization summits from Seattle.
Location: Workers Club, Lismore
Cost: $5-20 sliding scale

how to use the tools of observation, awareness,
and magic, "the art of changing consciousness

"Tactics and Beyond"
Workshop,10am-4pm
Nonviolence, violence, diversity of tactics:
the global justice movement has so far resisted
the tendency to split along these lines,
but questions of tactics and strategy are
always tense. How do we talk about these
issues effectively? How do we move beyond
questions of morality and look at the political
costs and gains of our choices? How do we
embody solidarity and organize together
when we hold different politics and principles?
We may not answer all these questions in
this session, but we hope to come out with
some guidelines and models that can help
us work together across the lines of our
differences.
Location: Ecocentre, Griffith University
Cost: $15-35 sliding scale, includes lunch

"Envisioning Global Justice"
evening talk plus booksigning, 7pm
"Another world is possible!" is one of the
favorite slogans of the global justice movement.
But what does that world look like, how
would it function and how would it be different
from the globalization promoted by the transnational
corporations and their friends in government?
Starhawk has been present at many of the
major mobilizations against global corporate
capitalism. In this evening talk, she discusses
what the global justice movement stands
for and wants. What can we do to make that
vision real?
